This concept house design was developed as part of my master’s thesis to test how bio-based materials could be incorporated into a simple, self-build framework for rural New Zealand. Set on a site in Omaui, Southland, the design uses a modular timber post and beam system with hempcrete block infill walls to assess how these materials perform against real contextual and regulatory conditions. The project revealed both the strengths and limitations of these systems, informing future iterations of the framework and the development of hybrid bio-based systems and components.
